Coinbase reported $719 million in net income for the third quarter of 2026, while adjusted net income was $78 million. The gap is a reason to examine the company’s reconciliation before treating either figure as a complete description of its business.
The October 29 company release also said subscription and services revenue represented 49% of net revenue. All amounts are U.S. dollars. Coinbase operates in markets where trading activity, asset values and regulation can change quickly.
Why are the two profit figures different?
Adjusted net income is a company-defined measure that removes specified items from the reported accounting result. The company’s earnings presentation provides the definitions and reconciliation. Investors should identify the actual excluded gains and costs before drawing conclusions; a large gap alone does not reveal which item caused it.
Reuters reported a return to quarterly profit as volatile digital-asset markets supported trading. Volatility can increase platform activity while also increasing risk for customers. More transactions do not establish that the average trader made money.
What does a broader revenue mix mean?
Trading fees are influenced by volumes and customer behavior. Subscription and service income can respond to different factors, including balances, rates, product adoption and contractual arrangements. Diversification across products may reduce dependence on one revenue source, but the newer sources still have their own market and regulatory risks.
Coinbase said prediction markets exceeded $200 million in annualized revenue. An annualized run rate extrapolates activity at a point in time; it is not the same as $200 million of revenue already earned in the quarter or a guarantee of the next twelve months.
Stablecoins are not the same as cash deposits
The company reported an increase in average USDC held in its products. A stablecoin aims to maintain a reference value, but its risks, reserves, redemption mechanisms and legal protections differ from an insured bank deposit. Readers should examine the issuer’s terms and relevant disclosures.
What to watch next
Examine trading volumes, the mix of subscription and services revenue, expenses, cash flow and the bridge between GAAP and adjusted figures. Both crypto assets and prediction contracts can be speculative. The company’s strong or weak quarter is not a recommendation to buy its shares or use its products.
